AN EXPOSITION VPON The eleventh Chapter to the ROMANS.
VERSE 1. I say then, hath God cast away his people? God forbid, for I also am an Israelite of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
VERS. 2. God hath not cast away his people, which he knew before. Wote yee not what the Scrip∣ture saith of Elias? how hee maketh inter∣cession to God against Israel, saying;
VERS. 3. Lord they have killed thy Prophets, and digged downe thine altars, and I am left alone, and they seeke my life.
VERS. 4. But what saith the answer of God to him? I have reserved unto myselfe seven thousand men, which have not bowed the knee to Baal.
VERS. 5. Even so at this present time there is a remnant through the election of grace.
VERS. 6. And if it bee of grace, it is no more of workes: or else were grace no more grace: but if it be of workes, it is no more grace: or else were worke no more worke.
VERS. 7. What then? Israel hath not obtained that hee sought, but the election hath ob∣tained, and the rest have been hardened.
VERS. 8. According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber: eyes that they should not see, and cares that they should not heare unto this day.
VERS. 9. And David saith, let their table bee made a snare, and a trap, and a stum∣bling blocke, and a recompence unto them.
VERS. 10. Let their eyes bee darkened that they see not, and bow downe their backes alwayes.
VERS. 11. I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid. But rather through their fall, salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousie.
VERS. 12. Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles: how much more their fulnesse?
VERS. 13. For I speake to you Gentiles, in asmuch as I am the Apostle of the Gentiles, I magnifie mine office.
VERS. 14. If by any meanes I might provoke them of my flesh to follow them, and might save some of them.
VERS. 15. For if the casting away of them bee the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving bee but life from the dead?
VERS. 16. For if the first fruits bee holy, so is the whole lumpe; and if the root be holy, so are the branches.
VERS. 17. And though some of the branches bee broken off, and thou being a wilde olive tree wast graft in for them, and made partaker of the root and fat∣nesse of the olive tree, boast not.
VERS. 18. Boast not against the branches: but if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.
VERS. 19. Thou wilt say then, the branches are broken off, that I might bee graf∣ted in.
VERS. 20. Well; through unbeleefe they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not high minded, but feare.
VERS. 21. For if God spared not the naturall branches, take heed, lest he also spare not thee.
VERS. 22. Behold therefore the bountifulnesse and severitie of God: toward them which are fallen, severitie: but toward thee bountifulnesse, if thou continue in his bountifulnesse; or else thou shall also be cut off.
VERS. 23. And they also, if they continue not still in unbeleefe, shall be grafted in; for God is able to graft them in agine.
VERS. 24. For if thou wast cut out of the olive tree, which was wilde by nature, and art grafted contrarie to nature into a right olive tree; how much more shall they that are naturall branches be grafted into their owne olive tree?
VERS. 25. For I would not brethren, that yee should be ignorant of this mysterie (lest yee should be wise in your owne conceit) that blindnesse in part is happened to Israel, untill the fulnesse of the Gentiles be come in.
VERS. 26. And so all Israel shall be saved, as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the deliverer, and shall turne away iniquitie from Iacob.
VERS. 27. And this is my covenant to them, when I shall take away their sinnes.
VERS. 28. As concerning the Gospell, they are enemies for your sakes; but as tou∣ching the election, they are beloved for the fathers sake.
VERS. 29. For the gifts and callings of God are without repentance.
VERS. 30. For even as yee in time past have not beleeved God, yet now have obtai∣ned mercy through their unbeleefe:
VERS. 32. God hath shut up all in unbeleefe, that he might have mercie upon all.
VERS. 33. O the deepnesse of the riches both of the wisdome and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his wayes, and his judgements past finding out?
VERS. 34. Who hath knowen the minde of the Lord? or who hath beene his Coun∣sellour?
VERS. 35. Who hath given unto himselfe, and hee shall be recompenced.
VERS. 36. For of him, and through him, and for him are all things: to him be glorie for ever. Amen.
