- A sinking lifeboat rocks ten white men and one African American man, who wears "Discord's Patent Life Preserver." A white man on shore urges the group to jettison the African American man rather than William H. Seward, whom Horace Greeley and Francis P. Blair are about to push into the drink. Abraham Lincoln mans the tiller, standing with one knee on the helmsman's seat. Cf. Gale.
