Title
An heir to the throne, or, The next Republican candidate.
Alternate Title
Next Republican candidate
Date
[1860]
Notes
Horace Greeley (left) and candidate Abraham Lincoln (resting his elbow on a rail at right) stand on either side of a short, deformed African American man who had been recently featured at P.T. Barnum's Museum on Broadway as the "What-is-it." (A poster for this attraction appears on the wall behind the men.) Greeley introduces the African man as the Republican presidential candidate and Lincoln hails the man as a member of the superior race and an appropriate nominee.
"Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1860 by Currier & Ives, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court for the Southn. Distt. of N.Y."
Probably drawn by Louis Maurer.
