TO THE LEARNED, WISE, AND INGENIOVS ACADEMICKS FLOVRISHING IN THE RE∣NOWNED VNIVERSITY OF OXFORD.

The Generall Contents of this Treatise distributed into three parts.

THE FIRST PART CONTAYNETH the Authours entrance into the Doctrine of EVANGELICALL COVNSAYLES, vvith his defence of the same against the secrete murmuration of the Brethren in OXFORD; and against a certayn lecture read there pub∣liquely, and purposely in impugnation thereof.

THE SECOND PART CONTAY∣neth the irregular, and violent proceedings of the Vicechancellour, and his complices against the Authour, and his doctrine. VVhereby the nature of heresy, and hereticks doth plainely dis∣couer it selfe.

THE THIRD PART CONTAY∣neth 12. Motiues (briefly, and naturally de∣duced out of the premises) vvhich persvvaded the Authour to embrace the Catholicke Re∣ligion.

CHAP. I. The first ingresse into the doctrine of EVANGELICALL COVNSAYLES.

CHAP. II. Hovv vpon the vicechancellours silence, the BRETHREN murmured secretely against the aforesayd doctrine.

CHAP. III. Hovv the former doctrine vvas illustrated, vpon the BRETHRENS priuate calumniation therof.

CHAP. IIII. D. HVTTON his kitchin-conference vvith me vpon the deliuery of this last sermon.

CHAP. V. Hovv D. Hutton, receyuing a copy of the aforesayd Sermon, found no matter of exception against me. His precipitate course hindered by the aduise of a learned, and iudicious Deuine.

CHAP. VI. Hovv, vpon M. Prouicechancellours cessation to prosecute me any farther, D. Benefield in a publick, solemne Lecture, did mainely impugne the aforesaid doctrine; vvith shevv of particular ex∣ceptions against me for the same.

CHAP. VII. Hovv the indignity, and leuity of the afore∣sayd Lecture, prouoked me to ad∣dresse a more ample defence of my doctrine.

CHAP. II. Hovv the Vicechancellour, after his returne from London, intreated me in his lodging.

CHAP. III. The finall proceedings of D. King, and his assistents against me, and my doctrine.

CHAP. IV. Hovv D. King dealt injuriously vvith me, and perfidiously, concerning the AR∣TICLES vvhich should expresse some crimes particularly obje∣cted against me.

CHAP. V. Hovv I vvas summoned to S. Paules Crosse, and defeated. D. Kings conference vvith a learned Doctour in London, about Euangelicall Counsailes.

CHAP. VI. My appeale vnto the Archbishoppe of Canturbury; & hovv episcopally it pleased his Grace to deale in the Matter.

CHAP. VII. Hovv being retired vnto priuate medita∣tion, J vvas found out by the Arch∣bishoppe his Chaplayn, & so∣licited by him to see his Lord. My resolution vpon a better course.

THE THIRD PART Contayning 12. Motiues, vvhich persvvaded me to embrace the Catholicke Religion. Briefely, and naturally deriued out of the premises.

To the conscionable, and Ingenious Reader.

The first Motiue. The Protestants admit not a triall of their Religion by the testimony of the Fa∣thers; vvhatsoeuer they pretend to the contrary.

The second Motiue. The Protestants perferre their Reformed Congregations, before the ancient CATHOLIQVE Churche.

The third Motiue. The Protestants brand the Catholique do∣ctrine vvith the name of Popery.

The fourth Motiue. The Protestants subuert the truest meanes of piety, and perfection.

The fift Motiue. The Protestants corrupt the holy scripture in defence of their opinions.

The sixt Motiue. The Protestants are Iouinianists, and the∣refore Heretiques, and not Catholiques, euen for this cause.

The seuenth Motiue. The Protestants accommodate their Re∣ligion vnto the state, and pre∣sent time.

The eight Motiue. The Protestants can patiently suffer the ar∣ticles of the Creede &c. to be viola∣ted: but they are seuere in those thinges, that repugne their vtility, or sensuality vvhatsoeuer.

The ninth Motiue. The Protestants do vnconscionably im∣pugne the knovvne, and mani∣fest truth.

The tenth Motiue. The Protestants, for vvant of better meanes to conuince the Catholiques, propose vnto them questions of capitall daunger.

The eleuenth Motiue. The Protestants Manner of proceeding a∣gainst Catholiques, and Catholique Religion, is absurd in reason, and vnequall in Justice. And hence they are prooued to be Hereticks.

The tvveluth Motiue. The superiour Magistrates amonst the Pro∣testants concurre vvith their subordina∣tes, to suppresse the truth, and to op∣presse the patrones therof, against all equity, and conscience.
